Ultimate Extreme Cold Ski Packing List for Banff Sunshine Village

Banff Sunshine Village has one of the longest seasons in North America, often running from early November to late May. Sitting high on the Continental Divide, it gets spectacular light, dry snow — and bone-chilling temperatures that routinely drop below -20°C.
The wind across Lookout Mountain and Goat’s Eye will cut a poorly dressed day short. To ski first chair to last, you need a layering system built to trap heat and block wind chill.
The Rockies layering system
Staying warm is about moisture and wind. Avoid cotton — it holds sweat and freezes against your skin. Build three layers:
- Base layer: midweight or heavyweight merino wool or technical synthetics that move sweat away from your body.
- Mid layer: an insulated down jacket or heavy fleece to trap warm air around your core.
- Outer shell: a windproof, waterproof GORE-TEX jacket that blocks alpine gusts.

Cover every bit of skin
Add a merino neck gaiter or balaclava. At -25°C with wind, exposed skin can get frostnip in minutes on an open chair.
