Kicking Horse Steep Terrain Gear: Essential Kit for North America’s Chute Capital

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, just outside Golden, BC, is nicknamed the “Chute Capital of North America” — more than 85 inbound chutes across its rocky ridges, and a regular stop on the Freeride World Tour. The terrain is steep, jagged and exposed.
Here, your gear is part of your safety system. Lines in areas like Super Bowl, Terminator and Feuz Bowl demand equipment that handles big forces and harsh weather. Soft rental gear and cheap goggles will make the rock bands and technical entries much harder.
What matters in the chutes
- A stiff freeride core: a damp, stiff ski or board that won’t chatter at speed or wash out when you need edge hold on hard, steep snow.
- High-alpine eye protection: the ridges swing between piercing sun and wind-blown whiteout. Quick-change magnetic lenses let you swap between sunny and flat-light tints.
- Low-profile protection: with this many rock features, a MIPS helmet and light back protection are now standard for advanced riders.

Know before you drop
Many expert zones open only after avalanche control. Check the resort’s daily terrain status, ski with a partner, and never duck a closed gate.
