Revelstoke Mountain Resort claims the most lift-served vertical in North America and an average of around 34 feet of dry interior BC snow each winter. The catch: getting there is a logistical puzzle. There’s no major commercial airport at the base, so every visitor faces the same decision on landing.

You have two realistic entry points: Kelowna International (YLW) and Calgary International (YYC).

Kelowna is closer. Calgary is cheaper to fly into.

Why public shuttles can leave you stranded

Shuttles avoid winter-driving stress, but fixed timetables are a risk in a Canadian winter. Airport shuttles to Revelstoke often run only once or twice a day. If a storm delays your flight or your ski bag is late, you miss the connection — and pay for an airport hotel while losing a pre-paid ski day.

Once you’re in Revelstoke without a car, you rely on taxis and resort buses to reach restaurants and grocery stores.

The fix: rent an AWD or 4WD SUV

A rental gives you control of your itinerary, but don’t book the cheapest economy car on the lot. BC requires winter tires (M+S or mountain-snowflake) on Highway 1 and most mountain highways from October 1 to April 30. A front-wheel-drive compact on all-seasons risks a fine — and the ditch.

To cross Eagle Pass from Kelowna or Rogers Pass from Calgary safely, book an AWD or 4WD SUV that can handle slush and packed snow on high passes.

BC winter driving safety alert

Don’t risk getting stranded or fined on Rogers Pass in an under-equipped compact. When you search, filter for mid-size or large SUVs with AWD/4WD and confirm winter tires are included. Check DriveBC for closures before you leave.
